Mutations are designated by the single-letter code for the unmutated residue followed by the residue number (based on the mature polypeptide sequence) and the single-letter code for the mutant residue. The mutations are mapped on to domain I of the crystal structure of rat CD2  (a) and on to a model of domain I of rat CD48 (P A van der Merwe, unpublished work) (b) The sites of mutations which had no effect on antibody binding are indicated by open circles. In (a) the closed circles and triangle represent the sites of mutations which disrupt OX34 and OX55 respectively. In (b) the closed circles represent mutations which disrupt the binding of both OX45 and OX46 whereas the triangle represents the site of a mutation which disrupts the binding of OX46 only.
