Hussain Abidi

Originally from Pakistan, Hussain was keen to study for his PhD at a top UK university. He applied to several labs in Oxford and Cambridge, and visited the UK to visit the labs and their professors.

Hussain was attracted to the Davis Lab by the quality of the work – apparent by the quality of the journals in which the lab’s papers were published.

“The research was top-notch and Simon publishes at the top of his field in high-impact journals. This was my main reason for choosing to work with him.” – Hussain

As an overseas student, Hussain found the team at the WIMM invaluable in helping him settle in.

Unusually for a lab, there is a strong social element, with an opportunity for everyone to socialise and get to know each other outside of the lab.

He was impressed how Simon expects his students, even the new ones, to contribute and share their ideas.

“I already knew what kind of work I wanted to do and the lab’s research interests aligned with my own. Everyone in the lab was really happy and welcoming.” – Hussain.

After studying for his PhD under Simon’s direction, Hussain moved to the US where he studied at Harvard Medical School for one year followed by post-doc research. He is now CEO of his own Biotech Startup in Boston, MA.
