Ricardo Fernandes
Ricardo studied for his PhD under Simon’s supervision and found the lab – and the wider environment of the WIMM – an inspiring place to study.
The approach to science at the lab – and how to design experiments that fully answer your questions – gave Ricardo an excellent grounding for his PhD and subsequent work.
He also valued the technical input from the support staff, especially the four research assistants.
“There’s a great atmosphere in the lab. Everyone helps you when you arrive; they help you get going.” – Ricardo.
Ricardo particularly enjoyed the collaborative environment of the WIMM and the opportunity to discuss and learn from the different research groups.
For him, it provided the ideal opportunity to meet up with other students and researchers in other fields in a relaxed setting and discuss scientifically good work.
As a direct result of his work with Simon, Ricardo won a Wellcome Fellowship. This is no small achievement, only eight or nine are awarded to every 1000 applicants, and two have been awarded to PhD students from the Davis Lab, Oxford.
